As the summer draws to an end and the days begin to get shorter, David Wilson Homes East Midlands has given its top five interior design tips to homeowners in Leicestershire, on how to showcase the latest trends in a new home this autumn.

Jason Hearn, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “Interior design is very important to many homeowners as it allows them to express their own personal style. Many would agree buying a house is one of the biggest decisions some are likely to make, so it is important for home owners to feel completely relaxed and at home, once they have decorated.

“I have put together my top five tips to help create a stylish look in any home this autumn.”

  1. Velvet

Be the best dressed house on the street with accents of luxury velvet fabric throughout the home. Jason said: “From sofas, cushions or curtains – there has been a huge increase in the popularity of velvet over recent months as homeowners have become more confident in making bold statements in the home. The luxurious fabric will help to create a sense of exclusivity and comfort.”

  1. Statement Mirrors

The best way to decorate an empty wall space or mantelpiece is an elaborate mirror. Using mirrors in social spaces such as living areas opens up the room giving the illusion of extra space. To draw the eye, opt for an oversized mirror with a decorative frame which will add a personal touch.

  1. Chunky knits and textured throws

Merging texture into an interior makes it more inviting and the idea of mixing fabrics and materials is on the rise. As the nights become colder, these comfortable textures will leave the room feeling cosy and warm.

“Why not try draping a throw over leather chairs or mixing fabrics with decorative pillows to update a previous look?” Jason recommends.

  1. Fresh flowers

Having flowers in decorative vases can become a statement feature in any room.

Jason said: “Flowers can take pride of place on a window sill or on a coffee table and will brighten any room. Not only are they pretty to have around but they will bring a beautiful fresh scent that will fill your home for days.”

  1. Geometric Prints and Tiles

To create an immaculate clean-cut look, try geometric prints on wallpaper or tiles. Geometric patterns have been an excellent interior design trend for years and it's all because of the versatility it can bring to a room. The best way to introduce a geometric theme to a new home is either using wallpaper on a statement wall or incorporating subtle hints, hidden in different furniture and fabrics; this all helps to bring the room together.
