Barratt and David Wilson Homes Raise £25,000 for Charity Close to Their Hearts

Staff at local homebuilder Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Midlands have raised £25,000 for their charity of the year Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance, a cause close to their hearts.

The housebuilder announced the cause as its official charity of the year in January 2017, after they assisted Sales Extras Co-ordinator Claire Hancock's brother when he was in a motorbike crash.

Along with fundraising efforts at a charity dinner, Claire bravely shaved her hair to raise money for the cause.

Staff members also donated money each Friday for their dress down day and Marketing Assistant Zoe Nightingale took part in two half marathons to raise money.

Claire said: “I put forward Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance as our Charity of the Year because without them getting my brother Andrew to the hospital after his crash within such a short time - he wouldn't be here today.

“I wanted to raise as much money as possible and shaving my hair was something I was willing to do in gratitude for my brother's life. In the grand scheme of things, it's a very small token and the fact that Barratt Homes matched what I have raised is just fantastic.

“I can't thank everyone enough for their support in making this happen. It costs on average of £1,700 per flight so with the funds raised throughout the year together we will potentially save lives.”

Among the fundraising ideas from the charity dinner, there was a raffle with prizes donated from local businesses. These included a night stay at The Belfry Hotel and some home hampers from the developer's interior designers. They also hosted an auction with items to bid on such as signed football shirts and boots.

The total amount raised includes a £12,500 donation by parent company Barratt Developments.

Chris Southgate, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North Midlands, said: “After we heard about the excellent work the Air Ambulance did for Claire's brother, we knew we wanted to support them and help raise vital funds throughout the year.

“As a leading housebuilder we understand the importance of supporting charities and communities and strive to give back wherever we can by hosting events like these.

“Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance was chosen as our charity of the year in January and since then our staff have been working to raise funds for the cause, with the main event being a charity dinner.”
