Lovell's Saints Quarter development in Wolverhampton has been named a good place to live after receiving the Building for Life 12 Award, which is one of the most sought-after national accreditation schemes in the industry.
Building for Life is a government-endorsed industry standard for well-designed homes and neighborhoods that is used to help communities, local authorities and developers work together to create the best places to live.
Saints Quarter is a brand-new collection of two, three and four-bedroom homes located on Steelhouse Lane. It is the first development in Lovell's partnership with WMCA, which aims to deliver 4,000 multi-tenure homes across the Midlands in the next eight years.
As part of the agreement, Lovell has pledged to deliver: high-quality multi-tenure housing; collaborative partnership solutions to meet local housing requirements; opportunities on brownfield land sites that are close to schools and public transport; innovative construction solutions; low carbon technologies, including electric charging points and solar electric panels, with a pledge to build zero-carbon homes by 2040; and local jobs and apprenticeships to tackle youth and long-term employment in the areas that they develop.
Saints Quarter has been accredited with the Building for Life 12 award due to its locality to neighboring amenity and transport connection links; meeting local housing requirements with 41% of the development providing affordable homes, far exceeding the 25% minimum; and the well-defined streets and spaces, which are easy to navigate.
Stuart Penn, regional managing director at Lovell, said: “The building for life 12 award is a huge achievement for Lovell as it recognises the hard work that was put in to ensure that Saints Quarter is a great place to live.
“We are thrilled to have regenerated this land, which was previously lying derelict for over a decade, into a muti-tenure community of 151 high-quality homes which are being delivered in partnership with WMCA, Wolverhampton City Council and whg.”
Andy Street, the Mayor of the West Midlands and chair of the WMCA, said: “Saints Quarter is a brilliant development and I am delighted to see its state-of-the-art homes being recognised in this way.
“At the WMCA we are determined to build more homes on derelict Brownfield land, and are providing the cash to help developers with remedial work. The development on Steelhouse Lane is a prime example of this, with the combined authority paying to clean up the land and Lovell coming in to build its award-winning homes.
“This is a win-win approach for residents across the region, with more homes being built while greenbelt land is protected.”
Louise Wyman, Design Lead at WMCA, said: “WMCA has a strategic partnership with Lovell, which shares our ambition of building high quality homes and regenerating brownfield land.
Following the launch of the West Midlands Design Charter last month, Lovell was one of the first businesses to show its support for designing great places across the West Midlands. I'm delighted that Lovell has now secured a Building for Life award at Saints Quarter and look forward to delivering more well-designed communities together.”
Julie Tanner, Chief Executive of the charity Design:Midlands, added: “The independent review of this scheme against the 12 Building for Life questions demonstrated that Saints Quarter has a high standard of quality and it's a good place to live.
“The combination of meeting design standards on a brownfield site, whilst aiming to achieve a good mix of affordable and market housing is a great outcome for the local community.”
The Building for Life award enables homeseekers to find a place to live which has been designed to have the best possible chance of becoming a popular and desirable neighbourhood.
