The winners of the Property Press Awards 2021, organised by Property4Media, were revealed tonight at a ceremony in London by property celebrity Phil Spencer, with The Times' Martina Lees emerging triumphant as Property Journalist of the Year.
Lees, senior property writer at The Times and The Sunday Times, secured three wins on the night, for Property Staff Journalist of the Year, Scoop of the Year, and Sustainability Journalist of the Year, and scored points elsewhere.
Freelance writer Zoe Dare Hall also collected three trophies, winning the fiercely contested Freelance Journalist of the Year Award, together with Lifestyle & Interiors Journalist of the Year and International Property Journalist of the Year.
In a night of triumph for The Times and The Sunday Times, The Sunday Times' Home section narrowly landed Property Supplement of the Year, while the titles' deputy property editor Carol Lewis secured the Special Achievement Award for Property Writing During the Pandemic and Property Columnist of the Year. The Times' money specialist Kate Palmer walked away with Consumer Mortgage Journalist of the Year.
Other winners announced by Spencer at the Museum of London ceremony (www.propertypressawards.com, #PropertyPressAwards, @Property4Media) were Alexandra Goss (Business Journalist of the Year); Ian Aikman of Which? (Newcomer of the Year); Victoria Brzezinski (Property Influencer of the Year), Jayne Dowle (Garden Journalist of the Year), and Gabriella Bennett of The Times Scotland who secured Regional Journalist of the Year.
Property, the NRLA's magazine, won its first Trade Magazine of the Year award, while First Time Buyer landed Consumer Magazine of the Year for a second year on the trot.
Phil Spencer, the event's host, said: “The property sector has always attracted some of the greatest journalistic talents in this country, and this Awards set acknowledges their acumen and their tenacity.”
Carol Lewis, deputy property editor at The Times and The Sunday Times, said in her Special Achievement Award submission: “Reporting on the property market during the pandemic has been one of the most intense experiences of my career. From covering the news the market was going to close for seven weeks, to Rishi Sunak's surprise stamp duty cut, to the scramble for second homes on the coast, I have covered (all) the ups and downs.”
Henry Hemming, CEO of event organisers Property4Media, said: “This was truly an evening of celebration, as our audience reconnected as old friends. Congratulations to all the victors, especially multiple winners Martina Lees, Zoe Dare Hall and Carol Lewis.
“We received over 190 entries this year, and tonight's event at the Museum of London was a terrifically exciting event, handled with great flair by Phil Spencer. We're planning something even bigger next year, so watch this space!”
“Finally, I'd like to thank my team for their monumental efforts from commencement to finale. Particular thanks to Louise Naude, who managed the entire entry process, Victoria Furse on sales and to Nick Mortimer for the event's marketing.”
