The customers who liked the product so much, they bought the company

Mr Gutter owners celebrate at the Southern Homebuilding & Renovating Show, 29-30 June, Surrey

The owners of Surrey-based Mr Gutter, one of the exhibitors at this month's Southern Homebuilding & Renovating Show, are celebrating their first year of owning the 42-year-old company. The two owners, Dean Brooks and Phil Perry were both so impressed when they had Mr Gutter seamless aluminium guttering installed in their own homes, that they bought the company a year ago from its original owner.

Chris Dawson founded the company in 1981 after finding out about the use of aluminium guttering in the US and Canada where these gutters have successfully stood the test of time in very extreme conditions from California's endless sunshine to Canada's snow and blizzards. He went on to import the first machine which extrudes the seamless guttering which now stands up to the extremes of UK weather.

Dean Brooks, already the owner of a prop and model making company for TV and film, had experienced some of the ups and downs of that industry during Covid and the script writers' strike and was looking for a more stable industry based on a product he could vouch for. His personal experience with the aluminium guttering convinced him.

He says: “It's a bit of a cliche that we liked the product so much that we bought the company, but I hated plastic guttering, and this is a great product. We turn up on site with the van and there is a roll of aluminium on one end of the machine, and we extrude the guttering out the other end. There are no joins, we mitre the corners which are fully sealed and the guttering itself has a thirty year plus lifespan and is recyclable.”

After buying the company from its founder, new owners Dean and Phil are expanding and are currently recruiting for an additional team. They have rejuvenated the 42-year-old company with a new look van and workwear and are busy installing aluminium gutters, hoppers, downpipes and leaf guards throughout Surrey and into south London.

Mr Gutter will be demonstrating seamless aluminium guttering from their van at site Front 3 at the Southern Homebuilding & Renovating Show, from 29-30 June at Sandown Park, Surrey.

Showgoers will also be able to experience products from over 180 exhibitors. The key elements of homebuilding and renovating from planning permission to interior design will be highlighted at 30 masterclasses and seminars in the show's two theatres and visitors can book one-to-one sessions with the experts.
