Cambridgeshire School Receives Hedgehog Home from Housebuilder to Help Prickly Pursuit

Barratt and David Wilson Homes

Cambridgeshire housebuilder Barratt and David Wilson Homes has donated an RSPB hedgehog home and hedgehog food to University of Cambridge Primary School to help reverse the decline of the species.

According to People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), the number of rural hedgehogs has declined nationally by between 30-75% since 2000.

Barratt and David Wilson Homes' donation aims to encourage the nursery pupils at the school to consider the wildlife around their homes and playground.

Eszter Campbell, Nursery Teacher at University of Cambridge Primary School, said: “Nursery children love exploring our wild forest area, where we learn a lot about looking after the plants and animals in our environment. The children have found a quiet, sheltered spot for the hedgehog home here, and added some leaves and twigs to make it more comfortable.

“We already have many creatures living in our small forest, including rabbits, frogs, and many insects. The children are checking the home weekly to see if the hedgehog has eaten the left-out food! Hopefully, we will soon have a new addition to our forest wildlife, with someone moving into the hedgehog home!"

Barratt and David Wilson Homes has partnered with the RSPB since 2014 and together are working to find ways to make new housing developments better places for wildlife and for people.

Will Phair, Sales Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Cambridgeshire, said: “As a leading housebuilder, we know that home is where the heart is and that's true for all types of residents, human or otherwise!

“We hope our donation will give hedgehogs a new and safe home at University of Cambridgeshire Primary School, whilst also encouraging the pupils to consider the wildlife near their own homes.”

Darwin Green is steadily growing into a vibrant community, which will feature a central park with over 15 acres of green open space and sports pitches. Future plans for the development also include a purpose-built primary school, supermarket and library.

Residents can also benefit from excellent commuter links and Cambridge city centre being only 1.6 miles away, with cycle and pedestrian friendly walking routes around the development which promote sustainable living.
