American buyers were already out in force this year, but enquiries jumped dramatically following the election earlier this month.
We compared visits to our website in the week following Donald Trump's victory, to the corresponding week in 2023. Overall, we had around 10,000 unique visitors from the USA - a 50% increase - but this figure rose dramatically in traditionally Democratic cities. For example, the jump in Washington DC was 1,300%.
There is little doubt that these new visitors will lead to a big increase in sales across the country.
Americans are already the largest group of non-resident foreign buyers in Paris, spending an average of $715,000 according to the Notaires du Grand Paris. It is a similar story elsewhere in France, with Bloomberg running a story this summer with the heading "Rich Americans flex-working on the French Riviera fuels property boom".
Now, with an even more dramatic take, the UK's Guardian newspaper ran an article with the headline "Americans are desperately Googling how to move to Europe".
It is early days yet (President Trump doesn't take power until Jan 20th 2025) but we have been helping Americans buy property in France for decades, and we have a large number of US nationals working within our sales team, which obviously comforts clients. They have been through the same administrative processes (on both sides of the Atlantic) and their local knowledge proves invaluable. Indeed, here's a video of Brad Turner who made the move from Boston to Bordeaux and now runs our office there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fubyHShkKo
Similarly, Andrew Guck made the move from Buffalo to Carcassonne, and now heads up the team in our office there. You can meet him here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HK-LgT_5uwc
We also have a dedicated webpage which helps buyers from the USA understand the process they will need to go through: https://www.frenchestateagents.com/pages/americans-moving-to-france
