Anyone in search of a healthy, happy, more holistic lifestyle needs to take a serious look at Portugal. The cities of Faro in the Algarve and Funchal on the island of Madeira recently ranked 3rd and 8th respectively in the European Cities Air Quality Visualiser, a comprehensive ranking of 375 cities across Europe based on their air quality.
Published by the European Environment Agency, the European Cities Air Quality Visualiser uses data from over 500 monitoring stations to rank cities based on their fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels. Just 13 European cities in the ranking have PM2.5 levels below the World Health Organization’s health-based reference level (5 micrograms per cubic meter).
Portugal is the only country in southern Europe with cities in the top 20 ranking of those with the cleanest air (the next southern European contender is the Italian city of Sassari, in 21st place).
“Cities with low levels of PM2.5 provide a cleaner and healthier environment, delivering significant quality of life enhancements and health benefits. Add to that Portugal’s abundance of outdoor fitness and leisure pursuits, and there’s compelling case for anyone wanting a healthier lifestyle to look at moving to Portugal.”
Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce
