- Attractive tax advantages put Portugal in the spotlight for business owners
- Moving to Portugal Show and Seminars in Dublin on 22nd May to provide in-person access to wealth planning and tax specialists
- Lack of capital gains tax and potential savings for higher rate taxpayers add to Portugal's lifestyle benefits
For entrepreneurs – particularly those who run their own business – relocating from Ireland to Portugal can deliver benefits that extend far beyond the country's trademark blend of sunshine, beaches and golf courses. For those looking at longer-term strategic gains, there are significant potential tax advantages to moving to Portugal. Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and organiser of the Moving to Portugal Show and Seminars, comments:
“Portugal's tax regime turns the idea of selling a business and retiring to the sunshine on its head. Moving to Portugal first and running the business from there before selling it can be far more advantageous – though every situation is different, and professional tax and wealth planning advice should of course be obtained by anyone considering such a move.”
Portugal's attractions lie in a combination of its lack of capital gains tax and its Tax Incentive Scheme for Scientific Research and Innovation (IFICI – commonly referred to as NHR 2.0). The latter provides qualifying individuals with a flat 20% income tax rate on all employment income and professional income they earn in Portugal. It also exempts them almost entirely from taxation on income sourced from abroad, including income from capital gains, interest, dividends and rental properties. Together, these schemes can deliver significant savings for entrepreneurs who run and then sell their business from Portugal, rather than remaining in Ireland to do so.
Specialist tax and wealth planning advice is crucial for anyone wishing to take advantage of the situation – which is where Dublin's Moving to Portugal Show comes in. Taking place on 22nd May 2025, the free-to-attend event will deliver a series of presentations, seminars, panels and more. The topics will cover tax, fiscal residency and other essential matters of relevance to entrepreneurs, as well as those considering moving to Portugal for lifestyle reasons.
Presenters at the upcoming event will include Forvis Mazars, an internationally integrated partnership specialising in accounting and consulting. With strong knowledge of both the Irish and Portuguese tax codes, the firm will be presenting on key areas such as capital gains, inheritance, NHR 2.0 and pensions.
A select number of exhibitors will also be at the Moving to Portugal Show and available for one-to-one discussions. They include The Sovereign Group, whose core business focuses on setting up and managing tax-efficient structures to support wealth management, foreign property ownership and cross-border business.
The Moving to Portugal Show will take place at the Herbert Park Hotel, Ballsbridge Terrace, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, commencing at 10:30 am on 22nd May. The show will be split into morning and afternoon sessions, with the latter concluding at 7:00 pm. Tickets are free, but registration must be completed online in advance at https://Dublin-MTP.eventbrite.co.uk.
