The Martin Place Integrated Station/Metro development by Macquarie Group has been named Urban Taskforce Australia's 2025 Development of the Year. The award was announced by Urban Taskforce Australia CEO Tom Forrest.

Sydney Metro Martin Place station was delivered through an outstanding partnership between the public and private sector, involving:

  • Macquarie Group as the developer
  • Lendlease as the design and construction contractor for the building, the new station, the associated retail spaces and the building above
  • John Holland CPB Ghella undertook the initial excavation and the delivery of the twin tunnels
  • The architectural work was led by Grimshaw Architects for the Metro Station, JPW for 1 Elizabeth and Tzannes for 39 Martin Place.

“Congratulations to Macquarie Group and Lendlease for delivering this outstanding project for Sydney. Anyone who has walked through the magnificent new Metro station at Martin Place, with its seamless integration into the surrounding precinct, will recognise the benchmark setting quality of this development”, Mr Forrest said.

The prestigious award was presented by the Secretary of the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Kiersten Fishburn to Michael Silman, Macquarie Group's Executive Director, Global Head of Corporate Real Estate.

“This development was built through the depths of the pandemic. For many months in 2020 and 2021, the tireless activity of the thousands of construction workers who built this project kept the CBD of Sydney going.

"Over the entire 6-year project delivery period, there were over 10,000 workers and staff involved with this project. The results are stunning and worth of the 2025 Urban Taskforce Australia Development of the Year.

“The Martin Place station development adds to a strong list of iconic new Sydney buildings that have all added to the character and quality of our city”, Mr Forrest said.

Recent winners include: the Ribbon by Pinelake, Darling Harbour 2024; Eighty Eight by JQZ at St Leonards in 2023; Quay Quarter by AMP Capital at Circular Quay in 2022; Crown Resort at Barangaroo in 2021; and the redevelopment of Parramatta Square by Walker in 2020.

Commenting on this year's winners, Judging Panel Chair and former NSW Government Architect Chris Johnson AM said this year's awards demonstrate the transformative role of quality development in re-energising urban areas."

"Macquarie Group's restructuring of Martin Place through the new Metro station with its two office towers along with the retail associated with the links between Metro entry points has lifted the public domain while also delivering quality work environments”, Mr Johnson said.

“Also noteworthy was Walker Corporation's revitalised Festival Plaza in Adelaide with an all- electric new office tower and in a joint venture with the South Australian Government redeveloped the plaza area with new water features.

“The judging panel was very impressed with the quality of development across all categories”, Mr Johnson said.
