A Home with History
Famed locally as “the mill with the crooked window,” Rossett Mill's timbered façade has stood sentinel above the river bend for nearly five centuries. The property's timeless charm was captured by Turner in his painting of the mill, which now hangs in the National Gallery in Cardiff.
While the site remained operational until the 1950s, it wasn't until 2013 that Rossett Mill was revived, not only as a preserved historic structure, but as a warm, contemporary home that celebrates its centuries-old heritage.
“If you're looking for a modern executive home, this would be your worst nightmare,” the current owners say with a smile. “But for us, the immense character, the river, and the beams it was irresistible.”
A Rare Fusion of Past and Present
Behind its iconic timber façade lies a four-bedroom main residence, seamlessly blending period craftsmanship with modern comfort. Every beam tells a story, some even bearing rope marks from their past life as ship timbers.
Inside, a series of character-filled spaces unfold: a beam-lined living room with an inglenook fireplace, a light-filled dining room designed for gatherings large or small, and a bespoke kitchen warmed by underfloor heating and crowned by a 200-year-old French oak island.
Beyond the main home, two self-contained coach houses, each offering two bedrooms and two bathrooms, provide flexible accommodation, ideal for multi-generational living, visiting guests, or continued short-term letting as the current owners have successfully operated.
A Working Mill — and a Living Heritage
The fully restored cornmill, rising across three storeys, remains operational to this day. Fed by the River Alyn through the original mill race and sluice system, it stands as a rare example of functional heritage, a space for demonstration, education, or simply the joy of watching history turn once more.
“In the original 1588 deeds, the mill owner is granted the right to extract as much water from the River Alyn as they wish, a right still held to this day,” the owner notes.
Nature, Peace, and Potential
Beyond the mill, 9.5 acres of landscaped grounds unfold in a tapestry of meadows, woodlands and riverside walks. The land includes over 350 metres of private single-bank fishing, home to trout, grayling, and perch, alongside resident herons, kingfishers, and egrets.
A rare black poplar gifted by Chester Zoo now towers above the riverbank, and the grounds have even hosted wedding receptions with scope for up to 18 weddings per year without a licence under Welsh regulations, creating an exceptional lifestyle or commercial opportunity.
“Christmas here is magical,” the owners say. “And in summer, the sun sparkles on the river as we come up the drive. It's a place that never loses its charm.”
Location
Set just moments from Rossett Village, the home enjoys easy access to both Chester and Wrexham, with local shops, pubs, restaurants, and schools all within walking distance. Rural yet connected, Rossett Mill perfectly balances countryside seclusion with modern convenience.
A Custodian's Legacy
For nearly 475 years, Rossett Mill has endured, a symbol of craftsmanship, community, and continuity.
“We're just one of many custodians,” the owners reflect. “It's been here nearly 500 years — and with the care it's had, there's no reason it won't stand another 500.”
