Guinness Property take part in a DIY SOS special for BBC Children in Need

The Guinness Partnership

In September, four members of Guinness Property - part of The Guinness Partnership, one of England's largest housing associations joined local tradespeople in Cheshire volunteering to build new facilities for The Joshua Tree, a charity providing bespoke health and wellbeing support to both children and their families affected by childhood cancers.

The project was a special edition of the BBC1 show DIY SOS that on this occasion supported the BBC Children in Need charity appeal.

Service Manager Marc Harte, Multi-Skilled Technicians Ashley Scoffin and Paul Almond, and Katie Hart, Apprentice Joiner, got involved after Ashley saw an online appeal from DIY SOS.

They joined over 300 local tradespeople volunteering their services on the Joshua Tree site for 10 days to build additional facilities for children and their families, including overnight family suites, wellbeing & counselling facilities, a gym and a multifunctional play space, as well as landscaped gardens.

The team initially helped other trades by working on the roof, installing insulation, panelling, and electrics, and landscaping the garden – but they also got the chance to put their specialist skills to use.

Marc Harte from Guinness Property said: “It gave us all great satisfaction to represent Guinness. It's a great feeling knowing we did our bit to help make life easier for young people and their families who aren't in a good place.”

Ashley Scoffin added: “It was an honour to be involved – after losing my dad to cancer I know how difficult it can be. It's been great to work alongside so many trades to make a difference.”

Paul Almond commented: “It was a great experience, especially roofing as the sun set, and meeting so many people all doing their bit. Knowing this will help so many families was well worth the effort.”

Katie Hart said: “I had the most amazing experience for a fantastic cause in my local area.”

Ally Jenkins, Line Producer, South Shore commented: “For us, a successful DIY SOS build not only delivers a spectacular building for very deserving end user, in this case the families and staff of the Joshua Tree facilities, but in doing so creates an experience for the volunteer trades people and suppliers that they will remember fondly for the rest of their lives. The accomplishments that come with the unfaltering dedication, love and attention they give are something they can be proud of forever and for which we will be always grateful.”

Guinness's social purpose goes beyond just providing affordable housing and landlord services – Guinness's social investment activities aim to also positively impact communities.   Ashley, Katie, and Paul worked full-time on the site, while Marc contributed when he could alongside his normal duties. Other GP colleagues covered for them in their absence.
