New Year, New You: UK Homeowners Embrace Fitness & Wellbeing at Home as the Role of “Home” Evolves in 2026

The Hill Group
  • 84% of UK respondents said their home supports their mental and physical health
  • Almost three quarters (73%) of people have made home improvements since 2020 to enhance wellbeing
  • Since the COVID pandemic, over 50% of UK respondents now use their homes more frequently for exercising or wellbeing.
  • 72% of UK respondents said smart tech has a positive influence on their lives
  • 80% of Londoners trust AI to manage aspects of daily living, higher than the UK average of 72%.
  • 40% of respondents said that a wellness space was important to them in a home.

New research commissioned by The Hill Group, one of the UK's leading housebuilders, highlights how the role of the home is rapidly evolving. Homeowners are increasingly embracing smart technology and flexible living spaces that adapt to changing lifestyle needs. As we step into a new year, these insights feel more relevant than ever; laying the foundations for how we live, and how our homes can actively support both mental and physical wellbeing, a priority that resonates strongly at the start of each year.

According to the findings, 72% of UK respondents and nearly four in five (78%) Londoners say smart tech has a positive impact on their lives, and 80% trust AI to manage aspects of daily living - higher than the UK average of 73%. Meanwhile, 40% of Londoners go as far as saying that they couldn't live without smart technology in their homes.

The Hill Group's Evolution of the Home study, which surveyed over 2,000 UK adults, explored how our homes and living habits have evolved in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings highlight a significant cultural shift: homes are no longer simply places to reside, but multi-purpose environments that must support every aspect of life, from working and exercising to relaxation.

Leading the way in designing future-proof homes that reflect evolving lifestyles, Hill conducted the research to better understand changing priorities in how people use their homes. Hill's design-first philosophy prioritises adaptable, light-filled living spaces that promote health, sustainability and convenience, so that its homes meet the needs of today's lifestyles.

Across the UK, confidence in smart tech is also growing, with 72% of respondents believing it has or could have a positive impact. The top reasons for using smart devices include saving energy, improving home security, helping to clean the home, improving sleep quality, managing exercise routines, and making day-to-day life more efficient.

The findings show how lifestyle changes are reshaping how people use their homes. 42% of Londoners and a third of UK respondents now use their home more frequently for exercise, while 30% of UK and Londoners now work from home, emphasising the growing importance of adaptable interiors. And a whopping 84% say their home supports their mental and physical health. As a result, almost three quarters (73%) of people have made home improvements since 2020 to enhance wellbeing, energy efficiency, or access to outdoor space and 40% of respondents said that a wellness space was important to them in a home.

This shift towards multi-functionality is influencing design across Hill's developments. From open-plan layouts that adapt to different uses, to integrated smart systems that optimises energy and enhances comfort, Hill seeks to help residents make the most of their space.

Reflecting the growing appetite for smart tech and home-based fitness, Hill has partnered with fitness technology innovator, MAGIC AI to introduce its cutting-edge AI-powered Fitness Mirror at Hill's flagship developments in London, Cambridge and Oxford. Now installed in a selection of show homes, the MAGIC AI Fitness Mirror looks like a traditional mirror, but once activated, it transforms into an interactive personal trainer, offering customised workout programmes and real-time feedback. It can be wall-mounted or free-standing, making it a compact and versatile addition to a modern home.

Rebecca Littler, Sales and Marketing Director of The Hill Group, said: “Londoners are leading the charge when it comes to embracing smart home technology and AI as part of daily life. As a forward-looking developer, it's essential that we stay at the forefront, anticipating how people want to live and ensuring our homes meet their evolving needs. The rise of multi-functional, tech-enabled spaces is transforming the way homes are designed. At Hill, we are focused on creating flexible, energy-efficient homes that support health and wellbeing and adapt seamlessly to modern lifestyles.  Our exclusive partnership with MAGIC AI is a great example of how smart tech can enhance the homeowner's experience of exercising at home.”

The MAGIC AI Fitness Mirrors are available in Hill's show homes at Dagenham Green, Kew Bridge Rise, Lampton Parkside and North Gate Park in London, as well as Marleigh Park, The Icon in Cambridge and Canalside Quarter in Oxford North, giving potential buyers the chance to experience this next generation of interactive home fitness first-hand.
