North Sydney's Residential Pioneer 'Tops Out'

Winten Property Group

Belvedere reaches construction milestone

Winten Property Group's $140M apartment project that led North Sydney's residential revival has celebrated a major milestone, with construction reaching its highest point, known as 'topping out'.

The site of 138 Walker Street, North Sydney, has seen a flurry of activity since Sydneybased construction company, Ganellen, started work on Belvedere in March 2012.

Members of the development and construction teams marked the milestone today with a tree raising ceremony, a long-standing construction industry tradition dating back to a time when all buildings were made of timber.

Considered a symbol of growth and prosperity, a tree is placed on the roof to signal to the city that the builders had reached the top.

Winten founder, Garry Rothwell, said the company is proud to bring the landmark project - the first and largest residential development approved in North Sydney in the last five years - to life.

"Belvedere really paved the way for North Sydney's residential revitalisation. Its approval was followed by half a dozen other high-rise residential projects.

"The area already offers so much thanks to its great location and good infrastructure, and now there's also a wide range of apartment options, something that has been lacking in previous years.

"Seeing Belvedere come out of the ground really cements the exciting change that the area is currently experiencing," Mr Rothwell said.

Ganellen Commercial Project Director, Christopher Ahern, said over 300 construction personnel have been involved in the construction of the 22-storey building, which will ninclude 195 apartments, a resort-style pool and gym located on the building's rooftop and taking in stunning district and harbour vistas.

During the construction of the 84-metre building, which is expected to be complete later this year, 9700 cubic metres of concrete will be poured, 38,000 square metres of plaster board walls and 4,800 square metres of aluminum framed windows and sliding doors will be used. Approximately 21,000 cubic metres of sandstone was removed, and most of it reused in various roadworks including the expansion of the M7.

"We have extensive experience in the construction of high quality multi-million dollar apartments. Belvedere is our first Winten project and we're very proud to be working such a highly regarded company to bring their vision life," Mr Ahern said.

Mr Rothwell said owner occupiers and investors had both shown great interest in Belvedere and only eight three bedroom harbour view apartments remain for sale at Belvedere starting from $1.71 million for a 112 square metre apartment.

Belvedere's first residents are expected to move in by Christmas this year.
