A Georgian house for sale on the South Bank is a rare chance to buy a property steeped in London history in an area dominated by new build high-rises
Leading South Bank estate agent Frank Harris & Company is marketing a newly refurbished two-bedroom Grade II listed house in Glassmill Street, SE1.
The property is one of a row of five former almshouses previously called 'St George's Almshouses'. They were built by the Drapers' Company in 1820 to help poor people who 'had lately perished by lying abroad in the cold for want of habitation'.
The house sits in a gated terrace approached through a communal garden. The garden has a lawn, flowerbeds and trees, including a commemorative rowan planted by the Wildlife Trust. Within living memory, the garden was used by the local Sunday school for their annual picnic.
The former fuel store and washhouse area at the rear is now used as a parking space and seating area.
Says Frank Harris associate director, Alec Papasavva: "This is a rare chance to buy a slice of Southwark history. We don't get many Georgian houses on the market in the area and this one has a fascinating back story. Not only that but it has been completely refurbished, with no expense spared, so you get the best of both worlds."
The property, which is in a conservation area, is on the market for £849,500. It is just minutes from the Borough Market as well as Southwark's exciting new bars and restaurants. These include Gordon Ramsey's new Union Street Café in Harling House, at the intersection of Union Street and Great Suffolk Street.
The Drapers' Almshouses were founded in 1642. The row in Glassmill Street replaced the original almshouses established in St George's Field in 1650. The Glasshill Street almshouses have been in private hands since being sold by the Drapers' Company in 1973.
