Iridge Place, Hurst Green, East Sussex
Smiths Gore's Petworth Office are pleased to bring to the market an elegant residence in a picturesque setting, principally 13000 sq ft of well proportioned accommodation set over three floors comprising six reception rooms, eight bedrooms, large kitchen, self-contained annex flat, domestic offices and attic rooms. Externally, there is a delightful walled garden, formal lawns, parkland and mixed woodland, in all about 53 acres (21.5 ha).
Iridge Place is an exceptional period property of about 13000 sq ft. This imposing residence is considered to be of architectural and historical interest and as a consequence is Listed Grade II*. The house has evolved organically over the years from its 16th Century origins to its 18th Century modifications and remodelled Georgian façade.
A property of this size and significance is bound to have quite a history and Iridge Place is no exception. Records indicate a tithing was established in 1248 and Iridge Place appeared as a Manor in 1539. It was purchased by a John Wildegos of London in 1556 for £440 with an estimated 300 acres. John Wildegos built a Chapel on the southside. It was reported in 1717 that the Chapel was in ruins and now no evidence of its existence remains.
The Peckham and Micklethwaite families resided at Iridge Place throughout the 18th Century and 19th Century. William Peckham was responsible for the building of the east front you see today. In 1932 the Estate was auctioned successfully but the Manorial Title (£90) remained unsold. It had its own water supply piped underground from reservoirs in nearby Silverhill Woods.
The area is steeped in history with King Henry III passing through with his army en route to Lewes and during the 18th Century it was known to be a notorious area for smugglers. Records state that possibly one of the youngest highwaymen at 13 years of age was charged at the assizes for robbing the Hurst Green mail to the value of £32 14s 0d.
Daniel Clay, selling agent at Smiths Gore's Petworth Office says:
