The sunny weather in the UK always brings out opportunist burglars but it also reminds us of the need for adequate home insurance at home and abroad. As we enter the peak of the summer holiday season, homes left empty in the UK are at risk of burglary while owners of rented overseas homes could be leaving themselves exposed to being under-insured.
Richard Way, Editor at The Overseas Guides Company (OGC) said: "Timer switches, burglar alarms, cancelling deliveries and having someone visit your UK home should help deter burglars from breaking in - but in case the worse were to happen while you're away enjoying some time abroad, you need to make sure your household and contents insurance is valid."
Meanwhile, thousands of second homeowners will be taking advantage of high season and renting out their property to holidaymakers.
Mr Way continued: "These people should ensure they have a specialist insurance policy that not only covers their holiday home during empty periods but also - if necessary - for holiday rentals. This means having suitable public liability insurance, cover for accidental damage and expenses incurred in an emergency.
"Foreign insurers level of cover will vary from UK insurers - so always compare."
