With property prices set to increase by around 5% this year[1], it is no surprise that the latest figures from the government show that nearly 130,000[2] people across the UK have used the Help to Buy scheme since its introduction in 2013, with more than 90,000 of those being first-time buyers. This figure is now set to rise dramatically with the introduction of the new Help to Buy London scheme, which is helping close the gap for hopeful first time buyers and property ladder climbers in the capital.
Michelle Harris, Sales Director at Bellway Homes North London, said: “The perception among the public of the Help to Buy scheme has changed gradually over the last three years. Due to rising property prices across the UK, prospective purchasers of all ages and walks of life are slowly but surely realising that the scheme does not hold negative connotations but it in fact makes buying a home a possibility for many first time buyers and a lot easier for second steppers!
Michelle continues: “At Bellway North London, we have seen a notable increase in the level of enquiries about properties with Help to Buy, which we feel has been caused by the introduction of the new Help to Buy London scheme. The scheme has already proven extremely popular among aspiring homebuyers stuck in the 'generation rent' trap and struggling second steppers in the capital, with many prospective purchasers now going through the reservation process. The increase in enquires and reservations across our developments in London, means that we are a step closer to making sure buyers are not priced out of the capital.”
Help to Buy London will be available on a range of Bellway Homes' new developments within the capital. To qualify, buyers need a deposit of 5% and a mortgage for up to 55% of the value of the home as the Government will then provide an equity loan of up to 40% of the property's value, which is interest free for the first five years.
